Private sector role in tech dev’t cited

The subregion formed by Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines (BIMP) will rely on the private sector to lead the push for information and communication technology (ICT) development, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) said in a statement on Monday.
MinDA said this was a consensus reached during the 4th BIMP-EAGA ICT CEO Forum in Puerto Princesa City last June 22. The statement said government and ICT industry leaders who attended that forum identified public-private partnership as a key strategy to narrow the digital divide among East ASEAN Growth Area (EAGA) areas, and between these and the rest of Southeast Asia.

This thrust entails creating an environment where businesses have better access to ICT tools, making broadband and other technologies affordable for all communities, and promoting innovation and collaboration among research and educational institutions.
