SkyCable launches new broadband Internet service

Cable provider SkyCable has launched a new broadband Internet service that offers high connection speeds at a price it believes most users are willing to pay for.

At a briefing on Monday, the unit of network giant ABS-CBN Corp. said its monthly plan P999, which offers speeds of up to 5 megabytes per second (mbps), is expected to be a “game changer” in the country’s broadband sector.

“What people want is speed but they are also looking for a good price point,” said Ray Montinola, SkyCable’s marketing head.

He said depending on how well this new offer would be received by the market, the company was planning to keep bringing down the prices for even higher connection speeds.

“We want to see how this offer performs, but in the future, maybe we can even come out with a 10 mbps plan if there’s a market for it,” he said.

Montinola said that at P1,000 a month, users now get connection speeds of only around 1 mbps from other service providers.

What allows SkyCable to offer higher speeds, he said, was the imposition of usage limits. For the plan P999, users will be allowed 15 gigabytes (GB) worth of Internet use per month.

For an extra P1,000, the limit is more than doubled to 35 GB.

Montinola said that at 15 GB per month, users are assured of virtually unlimited access to social networking sites, or as much as 125 hours of video streaming on sites like YouTube.

“We feel this is a step in the right direction. We are giving users the opportunity to experience speeds that they desire, but were previously unaffordable for them,” he said.

SkyCable’s broadband services, operating under the brand Sky Broadband, are available in less than half of Metro Manila.

The company said it was currently focusing most of its spending for the year on the expansion of its network to make it available to more users.
