The wireless broadband operator, which is jointly owned by San Miguel Corp. and Qatar Telecom (QTel), said in a press briefing on Monday in Makati that it is giving unlimited access to its subscriber as a way of meeting their demands.
There’s a slight restriction, however — the service will still be regulated among heavy users who might abuse the unlimited offer, according to a wi-tribe official.
Simon Burckardt, chief commercial advisor of wi-tribe, said the company will be implementing a “dynamic fair use policy” which will throttle users who will hog huge amounts of bandwidth.
Burckardt said the unlimited offer was not made in response to the recent aggressive moves of telco players, particularly Globe Telecom and Smart Communications which rolled out their 4G networks, as well as Lopez-owned SkyBroadband which offered a fast 5-Mbps access.
“While other networks utilize both 2G and 3G technologies, wi-tribe has a broadband Internet service that is pure 100 percent 4G. wi-tribe’s network is specifically built for data traffic and doesn’t have to carry other services such as voice and SMS,” the company said.
The Wi-Max operator, which has around 55,000 subscribers, said while it is looking to expand beyond Metro Manila, it pointed out that there’s still plenty of growth prospect in the metropolis.
The company’s network already covers 85 percent of Metro Manila, according to Burckardt.
Meanwhile, wi-tribe said it is rolling out a cash-back promo for the months of June and July in which every new customer will get a one-month rebate as reward for subscribing to the service.
One hundred customers will win 24 months of free Internet use and an additional 200 subscribers will get three months cash back.
