LTE emerges as the fastest developing mobile system technology

According to a recent report published by the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), there has been 40 per cent growth in the number of LTE devices launched by about 42 manufacturers in the past three months.

GSA strengthens the promotion of GSM/EDGE/WCDMA and evolved systems (HSPA, HSPA+, LTE/SAE and beyond) worldwide for the successful delivery of mobile broadband, enhanced multimedia, and voice services.

GSA member organizations include Aeroflex, AnyDATA Inc, Avvasi, Bytemobile, Ericsson, Huawei, inCode, mimoOn, MindTree Ltd, Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks, Qualcomm, Renesas Mobile, Sony Ericsson, SpiderCloud Wireless, ST-Ericsson, Talking Eye, Telcordia Technologies, and Velocent Systems.

The report named “Status of the LTE Ecosystem” clearly states the manufacturer, model and form factor, and operating frequencies of all the 137 LTE-enabled user devices announced by the manufacturers. The new line of devices include 45 router models, 39 USB modems/dongles and 9 smartphones.

In addition to the LTE mode, the report indicates for each device where complementary modes are supported such as HSPA, HSPA+ and/or EV-DO and TD-SCDMA.

LTE has been commercially launched in 14 countries and territories across the globe such as Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Lithuania, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Sweden, USA, and Uzbekistan.

In another related report published by GSA, there are 208 operators in 80 countries currently investing in the emerging LTE technology. Of these, 154 operators are engaged in deploying commercial LTE systems in 60 countries. There are a further 54 "pre-commitment" trials or pilots in an additional 20 countries reportedly.
