3 Mobile releases Huawei E586 MiFi mobile broadband device
Network operator 3 Mobile has announced the release of its new high-speed mobile Wi-Fi device, which it claims is the first of its kind in the UK to offer next-generation HSPA+ broadband technology.
The Huawei E586 MiFi, which hit the market this week, creates a wireless hotspot using 3G signals that can be used to connect multiple enabled gadgets - such as smartphones, tablets and laptops - to the web simultaneously.
Prior to its launch, 3 Mobile claimed the product would be 40 per cent faster than previous models, with this figure set to increase as the carrier ramps up its programme of infrastructure upgrades. The company is aiming to roll out the HSPA+ 21.1Mbps standard across 80 per cent of its network by the end of 2011, with the remainder due to be covered shortly afterwards.
Described as a natural evolution of the service provider's first MiFi, the device sports an OLED screen that displays information such as connection speed, data usage and the amount of time spent browsing the web during the current session.
A new feature allows owners to view their Wi-Fi username and password at the touch of a button in a bid to decrease the time taken to pair new gadgets.
David Kerrigan, head of mobile broadband at 3 Mobile, said: "As the network operator leading the way with a nationwide HSPA+ network upgrade, we're delighted to be bringing the first mobile Wi-Fi device with HSPA+ technology to the UK.
"People will be able to enjoy speeds of up to 5.9Mbps, allowing faster downloads, seamless browsing and an all-round improved experience."
The launch comes just a matter of days after the carrier announced a partnership with the Countryside Alliance that will see mobile broadband dongles, MiFis and around four million MBs of internet gifted to rural communities across the country.
Gringley-on-the-Hill has been named as the first village to receive free connectivity as part of the initiative.
